Drama therapy class experience
I really enjoyed the drama therapy class yesterday. It was really fun and playful but it was also so informative. One of the things that I thought was interesting was that he brought a tote bag full of colorful scarves. My first thought was that it was childish and silly to use a neon colored scarf, but when it came time for us to create characters I found the scarf so useful. In my group, we were discussing how creative we could be with the scarves, it could be a blanket, a dress, a shawl, a rope, a blindfold. The scarves allowed us to use our imaginations and helped us to convey our ideas to the audience. We didn't have to explain to the audience that we were a group of "mean girls" we used our scarves to show our group identity and we used them to show how we alienated another girl. I was blown away by how such a simple prop could change the performance.

I, too, liked the scarves and thought they were an interesting addition to the activities. It was funny to see everyone gravitate towards the scarves once he brought them out. We are all adults but somehow there is that innate pull towards items of imagination and play. I wish he had talked more about his use of scarves. I would aim to guess that they can also serve as a protective factor for the client, they can "hide" behind it while still being seen. Just a guess but I know my dashing red scarf made me feel more confident up on the stage.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting how creative we can become with something as simple as a scarf. All of the groups were demonstrating different types of scenarios or themes, yet the use of that one object was transformed in many different ways.
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting this! I wasn't able to attend class that day (and was very sad about it). However, reading about your post has also made me think of a time when I was little, and my best friends and I used to play with our aunt and bag of scarves for hours. I'm sure the class was incredible and I'm glad to hear that it was fun.
