Art Share

Since I'm not in the field this year, I don't have clients. But I do have an 8 year old who loves to create. The other night she created this image on KidPix (a computer graphic design program for kids) and printed it out to share it with me.

She told me this was all her years at her school and that she used the blurring tool to blend 1st and 2nd grade together because they were blended together in her mind.

I tried my best to make neutral observations about the colors that she used, the general shapes, and asking her more about which tools in the program she used. It was so incredibly hard for me not to pepper her with questions or to push my own ideas and interpretations on her. But I had Drena's voice in my head and that helped and I think it was a very good thing!

She had such a very tough time socially in first and second grade and it was really heartbreaking. This year she is having an amazing time, connecting with peers and building friendships that feel wonderful and supportive to her. So of course I'm feeling this picture represents so very much for her.

Very soon after she made it she asked if she could take a break from seeing her therapist (who is a LCAT!) and we all agreed she was ready for this step.  It's a really powerful piece and I think that creating it did help her to make meaning out of the last few years.
