Art Share: Emmy in the backyard
This is Emmy, the character that I created in class. The story that I developed was that she was best friends with my pet cat and the two would wander around the neighborhood and go on adventures. After reflecting on my work a little, I became more aware of how the life that I created for Emmy would be a life that, in the moment, I wanted for myself. I was thinking about the stress of midterms, internship, and adult life and the story I made up for Emmy was a way of experiencing regression. This theme was also something that I was aware of when I painted a sun radiating from the corner of the page and fluffy clouds. I wanted the scene to have a child-like quality that reflected the story I had in my mind.
I also feel really proud of this work- I'm really happy with how it turned out. When I heard that the instructions were to create an animal, I had a moment of anxiety because I felt like it was something I wouldn't be able to do well. I really struggled with the material and I was frustrated because I wanted to make it be able to stand on all four legs, but the clay wasn't strong enough. I'm proud that I was able to overcome those initial challenges and come out with something came out as cute as I hoped it would be.
