Out of Darkness

These are some glowing jellies I painted on the small black paper. I drew an animal which creates it's own light in the darkness. I noticed that these jellies are swimming upwards and slightly to the left. I have always drawn jellyfish and just enjoy how weird they are. Animals that can create their own light just amaze me. I also remember I had just watched a tedtalks about scientists finally capturing a live giant squid on camera, which took me to a place deep underwater during this class. I have always been connected to the water (im a cancer). I also loved these watercolors so much! In high school I hated using water colors because you had to be so gentle and careful with how much water and pigment you use and let it dry and layers and blah blah, but with these they felt more like acrylics and I loved how they shined when dry. I can't wait to experiment more with these watercolors.

  1. Diviya, I loved your project! Not only you have a lot of skill in that it's actually a really cool painting but I found the symbolism incredibly touching. How out of darkness can come light it's a truly moving statement and more so the fact that these jellies create their own light...It makes me feel hopeful, I feel that this would be a great metaphor to use with people who are in really dark traumatic places in their lives and how this can show that there is always a way to find light, even in total darkness...if not from the outside world from within you. We all have light somewhere.

  2. I love your jellyfish. My husband is terrified of them, and for him this painting would be a nightmare. He will not go in the ocean if the water temperature is above a certain number, and if anyone even speaks the word "jellyfish" he will probably not go in, no matter the temperature.
I find them beautiful, just as you do. I love their adaptaptations and the way they move. Seeing them come out of the murk of the ocean is --- profound!
I was so disturbed by my own "out of darkness" painting -- all I could think of was Godzilla. I wanted to paint something moving and nuanced, and all I could think of was monsters. So, I love the delicacy and mystery of your jellyfish!

  3. I really like the piece! The jelly fish in the picture are so cool! It remind me somewhere in Caribbean that has jelly fish and the sea would glowing at night. From your piece, I can see you have a lot of skills in drawing: the jelly fish are moving towards the same directions, and you put some white paints around them which made them feel like glowing! When I saw the picture, I feel that they are swimming to a place that is warmer and lighter, which is more than out of the darkness. It's like moving out of the darkness.
